Been testing FoloCam for 2 games and wanted to share some feedback and suggestion for improvements
Footage is jerky. Sometimes the camera tries to centre the ball in the footage while it move a tiny bit and thus feels jerky. Like a fighter jet flaps constantly correcting its balance
No info on the video itself. Would be good to see what zoom level, FPS, or settings were used for each clip.
Screen stays on the whole time during recording. Phone heats up fast. A sleep/dim mode would help prevent overheating.
Recording stops completely when the ball goes out of play. Instead of stopping, the AI should keep searching and pick it back up. It should have an option to never stop recording. sometimes during water breaks or subs the recording stops if no action is detected
No field boundary setup. The AI doesn’t know where the pitch edges are, so it sometimes tracks balls of people warming up on the side. Would be great to have a setup mode (maybe when connected to the second phone) to mark the edges of the field.
Sorry for the double post but I see that there are some logs in the folder. Maybe you can help see what caused the recording to stop. Are you able to guide me on how to upload the log file
Jerky movements are usually caused by these things:
phone overheating (which was the most likely cause based on what your described), especially if the iPhone was under directly sunlight. Remove the case if you’re using one; a tripod umbrella may also help.
zoom is too small – for soccer 11v11, 2x zoom is recommended otherwise the ball is too small to track reliably.
live streaming or remote viewing while recording – FoloCam has to use an additional video encoder to encode the 1080p video stream, which may slow down the tracking.
Also, try using the soccer pro model if your iPhone supports it. Generally the pro model outperforms the basic model because tracking is faster and more reliable.
To get the log files, open the Files app and you’ll see a FoloCam folder. Inside, you’ll find all mp4, srt, and log files.
I’m a new user and just filmed my first two soccer games today. I would like to echo the request that there be a way to mark the field sidelines in the app somehow and to ignore any action outside of those sidelines.
Overall the filming worked pretty well, but occasionally the Folocam would get distracted by kids warming up or kicking the ball outside of the field and it would start watching that instead of the game itself. I didn’t have any issues with the recording stopping at any point, I just let it keep filming straight through halftime.
Not anymore, but at this time I’m still considering auto zoom an experimental feature. If you’ve just started using FoloCam, I would recommend using a fixed zoom instead.
With a single camera, I don’t think marking the field boundaries would be accurate enough to be useful. This is exactly one of the goals of the AI tracker: to enable accurate boundary marking in addition to assisting with tracking.
