We tested FoloCam for basketball last night using the Basketball Pro model with an Insta360 Flow 2 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Overall, it worked fairly well. The tracking was good, it rarely completely missed a play, and the video quality looked great. The main issue was that some of the faster pans/sudden movements were a little jerky. For example, it might be following the action correctly but then make a quick, abrupt adjustment that makes that moment harder to watch. Is smoothing this type of movement something you’re continuing to improve with the basketball models?
I’m also curious what setup you’d recommend for our particular use case. We film numerous basketball games every week, but we actually don’t need a polished full-game video. Our end product is individual highlights that we cut from the footage, crop/verticalize, and deliver to the players.
Because of that, I’ve also been looking at the two-GoPro setup recommended by ActionStitch. In our case, we wouldn’t necessarily even need to stitch the two angles together. We could potentially have one fixed camera covering each side of the court and pull highlights from whichever camera captured the play best.
Given that use case, would you continue down the FoloCam + gimbal route and expect the basketball tracking/panning to continue improving, or do you think a two-camera fixed setup would ultimately be more reliable for high-volume highlight capture?
Would love to hear how you’d approach it.
Thanks!
