Getting ready to use FoloCam for the first time this weekend. Based on some FoloCam videos I’ve seen online, one thing I noticed is that the pan/tilt motion can still look a little abrupt, almost like the acceleration is too high.
Would it be possible to add optional motion profiles that change how aggressively FoloCam tracks movement? For example:
Aggressive: fastest acceleration and velocity to keep up with fast play.
Natural: balanced tracking with smoother starts/stops and less abrupt reframing.
Smooth: slower pans, heavier damping, and more fluid-head-style movement even if tracking is less reactive.
I realize these profiles could involve tradeoffs. A smoother profile might not react as quickly during fast transitions, but for some use cases I’d prefer more natural-looking footage over maximum responsiveness.
Yes, I did see those. The tracking looks terrific. My feedback is more about how the camera movement starts and stops, not the tracking accuracy. I enjoy filming sports with fluid heads and gimbals configured to ease in/out smoothly, so I notice abrupt direction changes or stops. For example, 0:14, 0:20 in first video and 0:07, 0:11 in the second video.
I think smoother easing during movement changes could make the footage feel even more refined overall. That said, I haven’t filmed with FoloCam yet so I’ll record some footage this weekend.
At 0:14 in the first video, the sudden change was caused by the occlusion a few seconds earlier, while in the other three cases, the change was due to the delay in determining whether the ball was moving fast.
I can adjust the parameters to make the panning even smoother in these situations, but as you said, this will inevitably slow down the movement when fast motion is needed. I think improving the tracking accuracy and responsiveness is still the key to more natural movement. There are still a few optimizations possible, so I’ll try those first.
